Vivek, an artist at heart, is a multi faceted person. He is a composer, a vocalist, and one who also plays the harmonica, apart from where his passion lies, what he is really good at is playing the Flute, or Bansuri’. He is the torchbearer of the Hindustani tradition of classical music, which he keeps alive with another tradition of ‘Guru Shishya’ Parampara’.
Vivek is hails from Chalisgaon, located in the Jalgaon district of Northern Maharashtra, a progressive state in India.
His early inclination to music was for all to see. His inspiration was his father late Shri. Ramchandra Sonar, an eminent vocalist, who was a follower of ‘Varkari Sampradaya’. It is a Vaishnava religious tradition within the ‘bhakti or devotional sect’ of Hindu religion, largely associated with Maharashtra, which has a seven hundred years old tradition of spiritual music.
Vivek started with a small flute at the tender age and has been his best companion since. His passion for the Flute could hardly be matched with anything else even in his childhood. He found his first Guru in Pt. Shri Purushottam Antapurkar. Under his able guidance Vivek’s passion got channelized for the better. As time went by, his quest for deeper knowledge about ‘Swar sadhana, Tantakari and Layakaari’ brought him to Padmavibhushan Pt.Hariprasad Chaurasia, who not only took him under his wings but also offered insights about the deeper aspects of the Flute for the last 14 years.
Style - Indian & Fusion
Connoisseurs have lauded his powerful blowing skills coupled with a strong command over ‘Tantakari’ and ‘Layakari’.
For the uninitiated, this style conveys incredible beauty, depth and radiance in music, which is reminiscent of his Guru’s style, however bearing a unique touch of’ Vivek’. He has also explored the field of fusion music with equal aplomb, performing at many Fusion concerts and has indulged himself in Jugalbandis with exponents of the instruments like the Sitar, Violin, Santoor and some Karnatic musical instruments on different occasions. Vivek has had the privilege and good fortune to have accompanied on stage many stalwarts, like Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Padmavibhushan Shri Birju Maharaj and Gaana Saraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar.
He has featured in some of the most prestigious music conferences and ‘sangeet sammelans’ across the country.

The 'Flute Symphony' is a novelconceptput forward by Vivek Sonar in the year 2007 and has been living up to its promise of an incredible experience for connoisseurs of music. The symphony, akin to a hundred-piece orchestra consists of a group of artists on flute in the centre, accompanied by other artists on instruments like keyboard, saxophone, guitar, drums and other delightful variations. Every year the symphony has featured a special Indian classical raga based composition. Each piece has been notably different from the earlier one, classic yet new, refreshing yet nostalgic. Some of them are compositions based on Raga Yaman, Raga Bhinna Shadja, Raga Kirwanee and Raga Khamaj to name a few. In the process, setting benchmarks against you for yourself. What began as a group flute bhajan performance has transitioned beautifully into a treat for the audience.

About Bansuri Utsav
The brainchild of Shri Vivek Sonar, Bansuri Utsav is the first music festival of India that is dedicated to the Bansuri and it was conceptualized in the year 2007. Bansuri Utsav had a humble beginning with 35artists playing on stage and over the years it has grown exponentially. Today, over a 100 artists play in unison on the grand stage -a marvellous sight! Until 2015, Bansuri Utsav was held in Thane. The 8th Bansuri Utsav marks a new milestone as it will be held at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Mumbai.
Bansuri Utsav attempts to highlight the various roles a flute plays in the different types of music. Be it a pure Classical solo performance, a jugalbandi, a fusion act or an entire ensemble, the flute takes on the garb of solo instrument or accompanying instrument effortlessly and this is evident during the show.
The magical evening commences with Flute Symphony. It is a sight to behold when you witness passionate flutists – their ages ranging from 9 years to 85 years - come together on one platform and perform unique raga based flute symphonies. All symphonies are composed by Shri Vivek Sonar.
Several artistic legends have graced Bansuri Utsav with their performances. Some of the notable names include Padmabhushan Vidwan Vikku Vinayakram, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Padmashri Vidwan Kadri Gopalnath, Pandit Ronu Majumdar, Pandit Rupak Kulkarni, Pandit Rakesh Chaurasia, Pandit Rajendra Gangani and Trilok Gurtu amongst others. Each year, the list continues to grow and ensures a thrilling musical experience for the audience.
Bansuri Utsav always concludes with the performance of the God of Flute, Padmavibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Bansuri Utsav aims to offer music connoisseurs a musical extravaganza which is totally unique and unheard of. With attendees in thousands, Bansuri Utsav has truly entrenched itself in the hearts of music lovers. You have to experience it to believe it!
